Course Description

'Movement for the Artist' is a guided workshop that aims to expand the performing artist's awareness of their physical artistic expression. The workshop is structured to produce a safe, creative atmosphere for performing artists, in which the student is encouraged to work both individually, and with the group to release physical habits that block emotional and creative impulses. This is done with guided storytelling, music, and the incorporation of multiple theatrical movement models, including Anne Bogart's Viewpoints, Grotowski-inspired movement exercises, and Kristin Linklater-inspired vocalization work. Through these modalities, 'Movement for the Artist' will teach students specialized body-awareness strategies to reduce unnecessary physical tension, and ultimately reveal the individual artist's freedom of expression. By working in a safe space with a group of dedicated artists, the class will strive to pull back the participant's insecurities surrounding their own physical instruments, and allow them to connect with their creative spirit.
